“Happiness depends upon ourselves” – Aristotle
How many of you have been brought up to believe that happiness is achieved through external influences. That happiness is directly related to the attainment of something or a connection with someone. However, there is an obvious danger when you allow external factors to influence your happiness and that is you’re really stating that you cannot be happy until these ‘requirements’ are met. When in fact it works the other way around; when you are happy those ‘requirements’ will be met.
So if you connect people and things to happiness, then you’re in a constant struggle to achieve what you want in order to make yourself happy. Some of the following statments might sound familiar to you.
- Once I have the right partner then I’ll be happy
- Once I have the house of my dreams I’ll be happy
- Once my business is up and running I’ll be happy
- Once I lose weight I’ll be happy
- Once I have the right car I’ll be happy
- Once I have the right job I’ll be happy
And the classic
- Once I have enough money then I’ll be happy…
All the time you connect your happiness with something external you will never be happy NOW, in the present moment! You are basically saying to the universal consciouness that you are not grateful for what you have. Don’t get me wrong, setting goals to achieve in the future is important, in fact you could have all those on the list as future goals, but none of them will actually MAKE you happy, in or of themselves! You can only achieve that from the inside out.
What really makes happiness?
Happiness is a simple choice that you can make every second of every day. It’s not something that happens to you, it’s a feeling that comes from within, that you feel with every fibre of your being. And that comes as a result of your thoughts. Happiness is, and can only ever be, an inside job that comes from what you choose to think. You can choose to think happy positive thoughts or bad, sad, negative thoughts. But when thoughts do start popping into you head, evaluate them against how they make you feel. Do they fit in with your goals, your own beliefs and values. Just let them settle and scoot them off if they don’t sit right with you.
So decide right now to be HAPPY! Spend some time making yourself aware of what you attach happiness to or what external influences determine your happiness. If it’s anything external, change those thoughts and move into the present moment, and scoot through the thoughts that don’t serve you. Only let feelings of love, happiness and gratitude eminate from the inside out!
There’s so much out there on the subject of happiness, but these are four of my favourites.
